The Story Behind Mmara
The Mmara series was created to help children explore big feelings when their worlds feel uncertain.
Through the story of a young magpie navigating storms, change, and new skies, the books create a gentle space for children and the adults around them to talk about emotions, safety, belonging, and hope.
Rather than explaining difficult experiences directly, the stories use metaphor and nature to reflect what many children feel but may struggle to express.
The world of Mmara reminds children that even when storms arrive, they are not alone, and safe branches can still be found.
The Mmara Stories
Each Mmara book explores a different stage of a child’s emotional journey.
Mmara and the Broken Branch
When the storm first arrives, Mmara begins to feel the world around her change. Through gentle guidance, she learns that some storms are not hers to carry.
Mmara and the Safe Branch
When the storms grow stronger, Mmara must leave the place she once knew and travel far to find safety. In a new place, she discovers that kindness and safe branches can still exist.
Mmara and the Two Skies
Life begins to settle beneath two different skies. As Mmara moves between branches, she learns that loving two skies is not wrong.
Mmara and the Red Feather
Mmara begins to question who she is after the storm. This story gently reminds her that the storm does not decide who she becomes.
Why Metaphor?
Children often understand feelings through stories, symbols, and imagination.
Metaphor allows children to explore complex emotions without needing to name or explain everything that has happened. By following Mmara’s journey through storms, branches, and changing skies, children can recognise their own feelings in a way that feels safe and manageable.
This approach also helps adults start gentle conversations, allowing children to share as much or as little as they are ready for.
Mmara is not designed to incite disclosure, nor does it label situations or anyone. This allows the stories to be interpreted across many different situations.
